Scott Shane, was at our IvyCap Ventures Mumbai office in Mumbai for a Fundraising Mentoring Session for Startup Founders. The session included a 1-hour talk on “Raising Money from Professional Investors” followed by 1-on-1 individual discussion sessions with startups on raising capital. Scott provided his perspective on how startups can raise funding from investors outside India as well.
Scott kicked-off the talk by discussing some of the challenges when it comes to fundraising, the two contributing reasons are 1. Information Asymmetry and 2. Uncertainty. It is common for entrepreneurs and investors to disagree on the value of a new company. Scott shared critical insights on an investor’s thought process and tools such as diversification, investment structure and valuation that are used by startup investors. The talk concluded on some key takeaways when it comes to “how to encourage investors” to invest.
Over 2 days, 14 startups participated in 1:1 mentoring sessions on fundraising with Scott. The deep dive sessions with these startups were focused more on their value proposition and evaluating their solutions to problems that exist in India and its relevance in the US market.
